"The truth is, the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water, and air, and it is the most precious thing we have." – David Attenborough
Were are we today?
In the Western world, the average person uses up to 200 liters of water daily — 150 liters more than in many developing countries. The WHO recommends reducing this to 100 liters per day for sustainability. On Kungsholmen, annual personal water use totals 5 billion liters, costing 56 million SEK — ten times the usage in developing countries and nearly double the necessary amount. Cutting consumption benefits both the environment and the economy, making sustainable water management crucial.
What is the goal we aim to achieve?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 50 – 100 liters of water per person daily for essential needs like drinking, cooking, hygiene, and cleaning. However, many areas far exceed this consumption.
On Kungsholmen, bars and restaurants use up to 147 million liters of water annually, while hair salons require over 3.5 million liters to serve their clients. These vital services highlight both our dependence on water and the potential for collective action to use it more sustainably. These services are vital to daily life but underscore our water reliance and the need for collective action.
Drop by drop, we’ve got this!
The goal is not to assign blame but to inspire collaboration for a sustainable future. Small changes, like reducing water use by 10%, could save 350 – 400 million liters annually — preserving resources, cutting costs, and positioning Kungsholmen as a sustainability leader.
Sustainability is an opportunity, not a challenge. Together, we can make water conservation a shared success, enhancing our community and securing resources for future generations, with businesses leading the way.
